Community Patrols

The Community Patrols on the APY Lands have been funded by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet through the Indigenous Advancement Strategy and have come about in response to a strong push from local communities.

The focus of Community Patrols is to work with the community, other service providers and police to improve community safety, including:

  • children
  • youth
  • other vulnerable people in the communities.

 The patrols also support the goals of the Remote School Attendance Strategy to ensure children are home safely at night and rested to attend school.

Community patrols are not police, however they do work with the police and other service providers to improve community safety – it’s about working together.

 

Communities with Patrols 

Local Anangu patrol teams have been rostered in consultation with the local Anangu Community Councils and operate evening patrols in the following areas of far-north South Australia:

  • Iwantja (Indulkana)
  • Kaltjiti (Fregon)
  • Amata
  • Pipalyatjara and Kalka
  • Pukatja
  • Mimili

 

Patrol Teams 

Each patrol team has a team leader plus at least one patroller for each shift at all times and may take place via vehicle or on foot.

Our patrollers are trained to contact Police if they see:

  • violence or community unrest
  • domestic violence
  • or become aware of abuse of children
  • drugs and alcohol in the community

Training 

All patrol teams receive thorough induction training prior to commencing patrols and will complete a Certificate II in Community Services through TAFE SA, and Mandatory Reporting and CAHMS training.

All patrollers must abide by the RASAC Code of Conduct, policies and procedures.
